Why Communication is Key in the Restoration Business

SERVPRO Person in front of a shelf. if you want great service with great communication, call SERVPRO today!

Stayed in communication and made sure I understand what was happening and if I had any questions, they would answer them! I highly recommend them!”

The above quote was from one of our many clients, and for the sake of anonymity, we’ll call them John. John woke up one morning to find that the line to his freezer had broken and caused water to leak from the kitchen into the unfinished part of the basement. He quickly shut off the water and got in contact with us to cleanup and restore the damaged area. The job itself was straightforward; dry out the area, then repair or restore anything that was damaged. But when John wrote a five-star review, he chose to harp not on the work itself, but on the COMMUNICATION he received throughout the process. This decision is interesting because it highlights what sets SERVPRO apart from other restoration and construction companies.

There are lots of companies that can do clean up and restoration, and John probably knew that. It’s easy to imagine that when he saw the damage, he googled what companies could mitigate it. SERVPRO came up, of course, but so did many other companies; some organically and some through paid ads. John had options, but he saw our raving reviews and happy customers, and chose to go with SERVPRO, and he’ll be forever happy he did. We kept him in the loop the entire time. He always had the ability to call us with questions or concerns. He always knew what was happening, why it was happening, and about how long it would take. Despite clean up and restoration being an area that John probably had no experience, he was able to follow the process of his house and his property being restored as if he was a member of the green team doing it.

Don’t choose a company that just does the work because you’re paying them, choose a company that cares enough to help walk you through the entire process of clean up, restoration, and reconstruction. Choose SERVPRO.

This piggybacks off boosting the local economy. When you support a local business, that business can become a staple to the community. It becomes a place where people can meet and meet up, make new friends or reunite with old ones. An identity can be formed around a local business, where you know the owners or employees, and know you can trust them.

  1. Environmental Preservation

You probably know preserving the environment is important, but did you know supporting local businesses does just that? But local businesses tend to also buy from local merchants, instead of from huge facilities far away, and this decreases carbon emissions.

So, when you have any kind of water damage, fire damage, flooding, or need clean up in the Barberton or Norton areas, you can support local by supporting SERVPRO of Barberton/Norton!

Commercial Cleaning by the Professionals

Why is Professional Commercial Restoration Cleaning So Important?

Professional commercial restoration cleaning is among the most vital services available to owners of commercial property. Most commercial properties get a lot of wear and tear over the years, especially multifamily housing units and office complexes. Why is professional commercial restoration cleaning so important? You’re about to find out!

Why You will Need a Professional Commercial Restoration Cleaning Service

There’s a lot that can go wrong with a commercial structure, especially if it’s an older one. Commercial buildings can be damaged by mold, water, fire, or a sewage backup. You hear about that kind of stuff happening all the time, but most people never think that it could actually happen to their own properties. Unfortunately, it can, and as time goes on, the chances of experiencing at least one of the preceding types of damage rises steeply.

Fire is spontaneous, you never know when one may happen, especially since it might not even start in your building at all. An example, you do everything right, you bought and installed smoke detectors, check them regularly, and replace the batteries. What happens if the owner of the building next to you didn’t do any of that stuff? Then they have an electrical fire. The building will burn, and it’ll probably set your building on fire too because they’re so close together.

Now consider this, after hiring a professional plumber to inspect and maintain the pipes in your building for several years, there’s a flood. After a flood, providing that your structure is still standing, there will be a substantial amount of water damage, and that damage will have to be fixed by a professional commercial restoration service like SERVPRO of Barberton / Norton. When you have damage from mold, fire, or water, that damage has to be repaired professionally, there’s just no other substitute.

Bettering ourselves through books!

Woman reading books Bettering ourselves through books is the team approach at SERVPRO of Barberton / Norton.

Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information, and you never know when it might come in handy. The more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you are to tackle any challenge you’ll ever face.  The team at SERVPRO of Barberton / Norton takes this to heart as we started our first book club.  Our first book was the “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John Maxwell.

As we discussed the book weekly among our technicians, office staff and management we learned:

  • A person must always stand on solid ground. Stick to the rules you represent.  Honesty, Fairness and Good Judgement are the foundation.
  • Your co-workers must respect you, but that respect has to be earned on a constant basis. It’s important that you keep earning this respect over time.
  • Hating losing is a good thing – it keeps you focused on winning. Giving up and losing are not valid options.

Should you ever find yourself in dire circumstances, remember that although you might lose everything else—your job, your possessions, your money, even your health—knowledge can never be taken from you. That is what SERVPRO of Barberton / Norton teaches our team.  So if you needs us, we will be there to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

There's no "I" in Team.

Two women looking at computers Two members of SERVPRO of Barberton / Norton operations team work hard to get the crews to you fast!

Teamwork requires a mix of interpersonal, problem solving, and communication skills needed for individuals to work together towards a common goal. These skills become even more important when you work with others on a long-term, sustained basis like SERVPRO of Barberton / Norton does.

To serve our customers the best we can we teach how to work constructively as a team and with our clients.  To help build a collaborative team environment, we work to develop and practice the following:

  1. Trust: Be honest; work to eliminate conflicts of interest; avoid talking behind each other’s back; trust teammates (you must trust them before they will trust you); give team members the benefit of the doubt.
  2. Clarify Roles: Review team member roles frequently; clarify responsibilities when action planning; relate team member expectations to team’s overall purpose; figure out ways to help each other.
  3. Communicate Openly & Effectively: Work to clear up misunderstandings quickly and accurately; seek to understand all perspectives; err on the side of over communicating; reinforce and recognize team member efforts. Learn to listen well.
  4. Appreciate Diversity of Ideas: Evaluate a new idea based on its merits; remember that reasonable people can and do differ with one another; avoid remarks that draw negative attention to a person’s unique characteristics; don’t ignore the differences among team members; try to learn as much as you can from others.
  5. Balance the Team’s Focus: Regularly review and evaluate the effectiveness of team meetings; design individual performance goals that emphasize both results and teamwork; praise individual effort; assign specific team members to monitor task needs and others to monitor relationship needs; hold team celebrations for achieving results.

Mold hiding or in plan site?

3/5/2020 (Permalink)

Mold in rafters Mold in the rafters can spread to other parts of your home. Look close and look often to prevent further damage.

If you smell something musty in your home in the Barberton / Norton area you may have a mold problem. It may not be immediately visible, though. Mold damage can occur on almost any surface, particularly if it is porous. All it needs to thrive is moisture and something organic to feed on. Here are some places to look for mold and tips on how to keep these places fungus free.

Where Is It?

Mold or mildew growth may happen anywhere there is too much moisture. Common places in your home where mold could grow include:

  • Drywall
  • Carpet
  • Furniture
  • Insulation
  • Draperies

Excess dust can also contribute to mold growth. A layer of dust on a surface gives spores in the air another place to attach and grow. Regular dusting can help keep fungus growth at bay.

How Is It Prevented?

Mold is everywhere. It gets inside your home by attaching to clothing, hair, pets and shoes. Once the spores are in this confined space, they start to look for a place to land and grow. Mold damage occurs when they find it.

The most effective way to prevent mold growth is by getting rid of the excess moisture in your home. Try to keep humidity levels between 40-50%. You can measure the humidity in your home with a device from your local hardware store. Make sure rooms that are prone to higher humidity, such as bathrooms and the kitchen, are properly ventilated for good air flow. When you notice a leak, call water remediation specialists immediately to dry and restore the area. Controlling moisture is vital to controlling the spread of mold.

As the homeowner, you play a key role in avoiding mold damage. Rid your home of excess moisture, and when you cannot, inspect all the surfaces where mold can grow to catch it at its beginning stages. By being vigilant about prevention, you can protect the air quality in your home.  If you have concerns call SERVPRO of Barberton / Norton to have one of their experts give you a professional evaluation at 330-825-1803.

The IICRC Develops The Standards For The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.
